Definition: ESG refers to the three central factors used to evaluate a company’s sustainability and ethical impact. Environmental criteria examine how a company performs as a steward of the natural environment (carbon emissions, waste management, resource usage). Social criteria examine how it manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and communities (labor practices, diversity, health and safety). Governance deals with a company’s leadership, executive pay, audits, internal controls, and shareholder rights. ESG factors are increasingly used by investors to screen potential investments and by companies to report on their sustainability performance.

Net-Zero

Definition: Net-zero refers to achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere, resulting in no net addition of greenhouse gases. A company, country, or sector achieves net-zero when its remaining emissions are offset by carbon removal activities such as reforestation, carbon capture and storage, or direct air capture. Net-zero commitments have become a central element of corporate sustainability strategies and government climate policies following the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Sustainable finance aims to channel capital toward activities that promote long-term economic, environmental, and social sustainability.

Definition: A blue chip company is a well-established, financially stable, and nationally or globally recognized corporation with a long history of reliable performance, strong balance sheet, and a reputation for quality products or services. Blue chip stocks are considered relatively safe investments compared to smaller or less established companies. The term originates from poker, where blue chips traditionally hold the highest value. Blue chip companies typically pay consistent dividends, are components of major stock indices, and weather economic downturns better than most peers.
In context: Companies in major equity indices — a European equity index, an Asia-Pacific equity index, and a US equity index — represent the blue chip universe of their respective markets. Index membership is a formal recognition of blue chip status — only the largest, most liquid companies qualify.
Real-world example: Companies like Apple, LVMH, Toyota, and Allianz are considered blue chip stocks in their respective markets. Institutional investors including pension funds and insurance companies hold significant positions in these companies for their stability, dividend income, and long-term capital appreciation.

Definition: A dual-listed company (DLC) is a company whose shares are traded on two or more stock exchanges simultaneously. Companies choose to dual-list to access larger pools of capital, increase their visibility with international investors, satisfy regulatory requirements in multiple jurisdictions, or support cross-border business operations. Dual listing can be achieved through a full listing on each exchange, depositary receipts (ADRs for US markets, GDRs for international markets), or through a cross-listing arrangement. Dual-listed companies must comply with the reporting requirements of each exchange where they are listed.
In context: BHP Group (BHP.AX, an Asia-Pacific equity index) operates as a dual-listed company with shares traded on the Australian Securities Exchange and the London Stock Exchange. Unilever (UNA.AS, a European equity index) was historically structured as a dual-listed company before merging its two legal entities.
Real-world example: A South African mining company lists its shares on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (its primary listing) and also lists on the London Stock Exchange. By being dual-listed, the company attracts European institutional investors who might not otherwise invest in South African-only listed stocks, increasing liquidity and broadening its shareholder base.

Natural Catastrophe

Definition: A natural catastrophe is a large-scale natural event — such as a hurricane, earthquake, flood, wildfire, or tsunami — that causes widespread damage and financial losses. Insurers use catastrophe models, geographic diversification, and reinsurance to manage their exposure. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of many natural catastrophes, creating growing challenges for the industry.

Definition: Property development (also called real estate development) is the business of acquiring land and buildings, improving or constructing on them, and then selling or leasing the developed properties. Developers manage all stages of the development process including site acquisition, planning and zoning approvals, design, construction, marketing, and sales or leasing. Property development encompasses residential (houses, apartment buildings), commercial (offices, retail, hotels), industrial (warehouses, factories), and mixed-use developments. It is a capital-intensive activity that requires significant financing and carries risks related to construction, planning, and market conditions.

Stock Connect

Definition: Stock Connect is a mutual market access program that allows investors in mainland China and Hong Kong to trade eligible stocks listed on each other’s exchanges.
